Saqqara and Dahshur are still Greater Cairo, and they feel nothing like the Giza coach park. The drive from a downtown hotel is usually under an hour once you are out of the river roads. You are in open desert with two of the most important buildings in Egypt: Djoser’s step pyramid, the first great stone monument, and Sneferu’s Bent Pyramid at Dahshur.
A private day lets you do both without a flag and a timetable set by a bus contract. At Saqqara we use the time for the step pyramid complex and the mastaba reliefs that actually explain Old Kingdom daily life. Dahshur is the wide horizon: the Bent Pyramid and, when the site allows, the Red Pyramid. Interior access is never assumed. If a passage is closed, the guide says so on the spot and we stay with the exterior and the desert light.
This is the day we suggest after a first morning on the Giza plateau, not instead of it, unless you have already walked Giza and want the older stones. Bring a hat. There is little shade between the monuments.
Both sites sit in our Cairo and Giza planning. Dates and party size go through Plan my tour, and the fixed private days are listed under tours.
